Commission on Elections posted a notice for media outfits that registration for new voters for the scheduled December Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in the Cordillera region and other parts of the country will commence on August 1.
The registration will last for 10 days including Saturdays and Sundays to accommodate newly qualified young registrants and voting precinct transfers, according to Provincial Election Supervisor Atty. Elenita Tabangin – Capuyan. This would mean an estimated three million 18-year-olds based on UNICEF data in the country. In the Cordillera, these new registrants are estimated at 10 per cent of the total population.
Capuyan’s conservative estimate is some 2,000 new voters for 2025 in the city.
The elections on December 1 will seat 42,011 barangay captains and SK officials with the creation of 10 additional barangays from Mindanao, Caloocan City, and Las Piñas in 2024 plebiscites that were held, according to COMELEC information. In Baguio City, 128 barangays will have new leaders.
Speculations on the postponement of the BSK elections state that this depends on President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. approval while many quarters are against the move.
