Balaoan, La Union โ The Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) has intensified its efforts to safeguard coastal ecosystems by strengthening the technical capacity of its Provincial GovernmentโEnvironment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) personnel. This was achieved through a Carbon Stock Assessment Orientation and Field Activity held at the Immuki Island Mangrove Area in Balaoan, La Union.

The two-day activity, conducted in celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, established baseline data on the amount of carbon stored in forest ecosystems and vegetation, with a particular focus on the provinceโs mangrove environments.

Mangrove ecosystems play a crucial role in climate resilience. They act as natural carbon sinks, capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide, while also serving as protective coastal barriers against erosion, storm surges, and other environmental hazards. By enhancing the knowledge and skills of PG-ENRO personnel, PGLU aims to ensure that these ecosystems are effectively monitored, managed, and preserved for future generations.
This initiative underscores La Unionโs commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action, highlighting the provinceโs proactive stance in protecting biodiversity and strengthening coastal resilience.
