Australian Embassy launches new funding program for Filipina-owned firms

MANILA, PHILIPPINES- Access to growth capital is made easier for women led businesses with the new program SheSecure launched by ARQ SME Business Development Company, an SME-focused debt and mezzanine investor, in collaboration with the Australian-funded Investing in Women Initiative last December 5.

Australian Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission, Dr. Moya Collett said, “Australia is committed to supporting gender equality, and we are investing in women’s economic empowerment to help achieve this.” She noted that since 2016, women in the Southeast Asia Region have led companies that have improved products and employment but very few small companies have grown because of lack in capital. It was observed that not many lending institutions were ready to allow these companies to borrow the needed financial boost to progress further. Australia was ready to partner with private groups as source for this added capital without the stringent requisites of banks.

Abigail Tan, Managing Partner ARQ SME BDC, said that SheSecure aims to bridge the gap for women entrepreneurs lacking appropriate capital for growth. “By providing incentives linked to measurable progress in gender performance, SheSecure empowers companies to mainstream gender equality – ensuring opportunities and leadership roles are accessible to everyone, regardless of gender, “she said. “This initiative aligns with the broader vision of creating “gender-smart enterprises” that deliver strong financial returns alongside positive social impact.” Prioritizing both profit and social progress is a win-win for businesses, their customers, and society as a whole.

SheSecure offers financing of up to PhP 30 million per enterprise together with interest incentives tied to improvements in gender equality practices. These funds can be utilized by the companies to fuel expansion, invest in new technologies, or support their working capital requirements. By Nonnette C. Bennett
