BUCAY, Abra— The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has expanded digital connectivity in Abra, providing free internet access to about 3,000 residents through its Bayanihan SIM Program.

The initiative, which prioritizes geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, distributes SIM cards loaded with 25 gigabytes of mobile data every month for one year, ensuring that beneficiaries can stay connected to online resources and opportunities.

Reaching Remote Communities

DICT-Abra Provincial Officer Rufino Cabato reported that the program has already reached thousands of residents in municipalities such as Boliney, Bucloc, Tubo, Daguioman, Luba, Bucay, and Sallapadan.

“Around 3,000 Abrenians were already provided with the Bayanihan SIM Cards. These will be replenished with 25GB every month for 12 months,” Cabato said.

Support for Students

As part of the ICT Month celebration, the latest distribution was held at Madalipay Elementary School in Bucay, where around 100 learners and their parents received free SIM cards.

Teachers and students welcomed the assistance, noting its impact on education. Teacher-in-Charge Florante Belaras said the program helps compensate for limited internet access and ICT equipment in the school.

Grade 6 learner Gabriel Seth Mangaliag shared that the SIM card would be useful for research and communication:

“Adda tattan usaren mi nga ag research kadagiti assignments mi ken mausar payen ti announcement ti group chat ken Facebook,” he said, explaining that students can now use the internet for assignments and school announcements.

Bridging the Digital Divide

Cabato emphasized that remote towns remain a priority for DICT as it continues to bridge the digital divide. The Bayanihan SIM Project will further expand to other far-flung areas, advancing the government’s goal of building a more connected and digitally empowered province.
