Cordillera Heritage Hub: Preserving Identity, Inspiring Future

Cultural Hub at the Department of Tourism complex in Baguio City.

At the Department of Tourism–Cordillera Administrative Region’s Cultural Hub, two artisans stood as living testaments to the resilience of indigenous traditions: a basket and fabric weaver, and a woodcarver. Their hands, seasoned by years of practice, transformed raw materials into works of art—woven baskets that carried stories of harvest and survival, and carved figures that embodied ancestral memory.

These artisans are more than craftsmen; they are cultural bearers. Each weave and carving is a thread in the tapestry of Cordillera identity, a reminder that heritage is not only preserved in museums but lived through the skills passed down across generations.

Loomweaving is among the heritage skills in the Cordillera.

A Repository of Heritage

The Cordillera region is a repository of rich indigenous heritage, reflected in its crafts, oral traditions, musical instruments, ritual objects, and traditional knowledge systems. Yet modernization and the absence of platforms for preservation threaten these treasures. Without spaces for appreciation and transmission, many of these cultural assets risk fading into obscurity.

The Vision of the Heritage Hub

The Cordillera Heritage Hub was conceived as a response to this challenge. More than an exhibit, it is a learning center—a curated space where indigenous art installations, storytelling, and cultural exchange converge. Here, visitors encounter the living traditions of the Cordillera peoples, not as relics of the past but as vibrant expressions of identity.

The Hub’s objectives are clear:

  • Preserve and promote tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
  • Provide a curated space for learning, exchange, and appreciation.
  • Support local artisans and culture bearers by acquiring and exhibiting their works.
  • Strengthen pride and identity among indigenous communities while educating tourists and locals.

Inspiring Future Generations

By spotlighting artisans like the weaver and woodcarver, the Hub underscores the importance of sustaining cultural practices. Their presence is not only a demonstration of skill but an invitation to younger generations to take pride in their roots.

The Cordillera Heritage Hub is more than a building—it is a movement. It reminds us that heritage thrives when it is shared, celebrated, and lived. In every basket woven and every figure carved, the Cordillera’s spirit endures, inspiring a future where identity and tradition remain at the heart of community life.
