BJMP Catfish for November harvest
By: Nonnette C. Bennett
There are 97 catfish for harvest early November at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Baguio City Male Dorm with the continuous supply of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae.
Dr. James Bayang, Doc Brahman Agritech Services and Easter School Alumni Association chair, said that the larvae feeds from the BSF facility that started on 2 July 2025 to process the biowaste will sustain the catfish until harvest.
JO1 Jenny Claire Chinalpan confirmed that the BSF project in the circular economy is successful with the continuous supply of BSF eggs from Dr. Bayang and the conversion of biowaste into food for the catfish.
PDL Peter, not his real name, caretaker of the BSF facility and City Jail Garden said that the catfish are fed 100 grams of larvae twice a day without leftovers as advised by Dr. Bayang. There were only three dead catfish from the 100 given by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in August because of the water used at the start of the project. The fertilizer end product is currently used in the garden for the boc choy or Chinese cabbage plants. He said that it is easy to tend the BSF larvae. This would test the organic potency of the BSF larvae fertilizer that regenerates soil fertility.
