Even Tropical Depression Marisol on 17 March could not stop some 1,800 students and faculty of the University of the Philippines Baguio from walking out of their classrooms to voice out their protests against the current issues of corruption in government.
Under umbrellas, they chanted the traditional “Ibagsak, Huwag matakot!” They said that each individual should speak up to make the call louder for accessible education and proper service to citizens. Emotions ran high in the call for unity because of the effect of the massive corruption in government on the people in the fringes of society.
They sang “Martin, Martin, magnanakaw, magnanakaw si Martin” to the tune of “When the Saints go marchin’ in.” More than 60 student organizations in the campus signed the manifesto of unity.
Unmindful of the rain, they marched to call on action against the corruption of government.
Another protest rally is set on September 21 at the Upper Session Road that will include civil society and other organizations in Baguio City.
