The Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera (DPWH-CAR) is exerting every effort to fully open closed road sections in the region due to recent typhoons.

Engr. Patrick Cerilo from the Maintenance Section of DPWH-CAR said that as of 11:00 AM of November 12, 2024, a total of 159 road sections across the region were affected by tropical cyclones Marce and Nika.

Cerilo said 113 roads were affected during the onslaught of Marce and 81 percent were already opened.

Meanwhile, Nika affected 46 roads with 70 percent now open. Road clearing efforts are ongoing in road sections that are still closed.

“As soon as possible kasi ‘yung clamor ng mga mamamayan kasi kung ‘di natin mao-open, apektado ‘yung economic activities natin dito sa Cordillera,” Cerilo said.

The DPWH-CAR recorded a total of P23,681,550.00 in damages to infrastructure during the onset of Marce.

Cerilo said the estimated amount needed to repair or rehabilitate these roads is P75,900,000.00. They are still collating the data on reported damages from the onslaught of Nika.

Meanwhile, he reminded motorists to remain cautious when travelling and stay updated on the situation of roads in the region especially during typhoon season.

“Stay safe and updated kasi may mga nao-open na kalsada. Baka naman basta tayo bibiyahe, hindi tayo updated eh close naman pala ang kalsada kaya dapat updated tayo,” he said.

Cerilo also assured that teams are already deployed across the region in preparation for the possible effects of tropical cyclone Ofel which has now developed as a severe tropical storm.  Philippine Information Agency Cordillera
